If my app is free why am I asked to pay $99?

I signed up to develop free apps.  I find though that I cannot "publish" them unless I pay $99.  Why am I asked to pay if you advertise that it's free or am I missing something?

Hi Nahnah,

The $99 is for the Apple Developer Account—this is Apple's fee and they require that you have a Developer Account to create test apps for iPhone and publish to the App Store. AppMakr itself offers a free version to create apps, but if you want to publish iPhone apps you need an Apple Developer Account. You don't need the Apple Developer Account to make Android or Windows apps, however, so wouldn't have to pay the $99.

Hope that clarifies things!

Nahnah,

Creating the SDK, hosting apps, etc.. Costs money for Apple to hire developers to do all this. App Makr also has to make money that is why they have ads.
