[NEWS] Google no longer supports GeoRSS as of April 2011

I discovered on 4/12/11 that Google's GeoRSS button was missing from the 'My Maps' view and previously created feeds were not working correctly or at all.  Users started a Google thread complaining about the missing/broken feature.  Finally Google responded to the thread yesterday.  Basically, they won't provide a feed URL for My Maps anymore but only a KML output file.
Google's response:
Due to low usage, the decision had been made to deprecate the feature. Apologies for not reaching out to you all sooner about the change.

I've passed along this thread to the product team, to show your enthusiasm for this particular feature in case they reconsider this change down the road. So a big thank you to everyone for speaking up in this thread.

A few of you have mentioned workarounds — i.e., using the KML output and converting it to GeoRSS using a variety of methods — and these should work just fine

Hey Hayley,

Were you able to make any progress on this issue? I tried to do another rebuild and am coming across the same error. If it's an issue with a tab or feature, I don't mind deleting or changing a few just so it can process the rebuild. Thanks!

@Rachel, yes if I could get the build #, app ID and the feeds you are using, that would be great! I'll bring this issue to one of our devs and see what the problem might be.

Hi Hayley!

Yes, I'm still have issues with my build! I'm getting an error and I can't figure out why. I changed all of the Georss links via yahoo pipes to convert them to KML, but still having a build error. Do you need information from me to check it out (i.e. build number)?

Thanks!

Rachel

Hi!

When I try converting Google's KML to RSS via the yahoo link, it says "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below." and gives an unformatted version of the RSS. Do you know how to prevent this? I am having a build error as well, and am not sure if this issue could be causing the build error. I am trying to submit a re-build and this is the only thing I've changed, so I'm assuming that's it.?

Thanks!

Step 1 - Create Map in Google Maps = My Places and save that map

Step 2 - Click on "Link" top right of your  Google Maps page ( uses a chain-link icon)

Step 3 - Open Yahoo Pipes ( http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.info?_id=QAEgr2Oj3BGEQQ7sjUnRlg ) and copy the above link into the "Run Pipe" Box

Step 4 - Add     &output=kml      at the end of the above link within the "Run Pipe" Box

Step 6 - Run the Above feed through feedburner.com

You now have and RSS feed that is ready for Appmakr .

To make this a GeoRSS feed complete these additional steps:

Step 7 - In Appmakr create a "Location Aware (GeoRSS) " tab

Step 8 - Add this               feed://ws.geonames.org/rssToGeoRSS?feedUrl=

The GeoRSS feed would thus look something like this :          feed://ws.geonames.org/rssToGeoRSS?feedUrl=YOUR_RSS_Feed_Created_STEP6

I have found a work around for this.

You can pass your google KML feed into a yahoo pipe and therefore get a RSS feed.

Step 1 Getting your KML Feed

Right click 'View in Google Earth' and copy the link to the clipboard - now paste this into the address bar but change the [ output=nl ] to [ output=kml ].

Step 2 - Createing the pipe

Paste the link with the NL changed to KML into the box and Run Pipe (http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.info?_id=QAEgr2Oj3BGEQQ7sjUnRlg)

Step 3 - Copy RSS

Copy the RSS and paste into Appmakr

Boom and your done
