Windows Phone 7 apps fail certification

J.C. Hornbeck
asked this on April 06, 2011 06:41 am

I built a pretty simple AppMakr app that consolidates RSS feeds for some blogs I manage and the app builds and runs fine, but when submitted to Microsoft for certification it fails.  Specifically it fails test 5.2 Application Reliability.  The requirements for the test state "The application must handle exceptions raised by .NET Framework and not terminate unexpectedly."  The repro is as follows:

1. Launch the application.

2. Press "..."

3. Press "settings".

4. Press "clear" to clear the cached data.

5. Press "ok"/

6. Press the device's back button.

7. Select any category.

8. Select an article.

9. When the article loads, press the device's start button.

10. Press the device's back button to reactivate the application.

11. Observe the unhelpful error message "NullReferenceException."

Considering that I have no control over this I must assume it's a bug and thus I'm surprised ANY WinPhone 7 AppMakr apps could ever pass certification.  Any help getting past this would be much appreciated.  Attached is the official test result doc from Microsoft.

I am getting for all my application this error and failed to upload to Marketplace.

[NeutralResourceLanguage] attribute is missing on the entry assembly (2003)

Please look at the following link that will help you in fixing this:

Hey guys, I wrote up a little documentation on the color rejection and how you can check the themes on your phone. It's available here: http://help.appmakr.com/entries/20223311-app-rejected-because-of-color

That's correct, it's a color issue in which choosing straight black or straight white is going to get your app denied by Microsoft.

It sounds like a color issue since they test in both dark and light settings for WP7. If your lower bar is black, when they test in light setting, your controls are not visible. I had this issue before on an app, so I changed my lower bar to grey and it passed fine.

Is that a colour thing? I know black or White totally fails to show up, so all I did was choose a colour and it passed.

Thanks Mark - the attachment shows that the actions menu does not appears as a menu in IE8 or IE9.

That's right. You have to click on the app that has failed, then in the right you have a drop down menu. Choose results or something similar and eventually a PDF will download and it's all in that PDF. I think it'll pass if you just adjust a few things.

My first very simple app has failed to pass Microsoft testing - all it does is link to my twitter, twitpic and facebook RSS feeds.

Here is the e-mail from Microsoft:

From: Windows Phone Marketplace Developer Support [mailto:mktpdev@microsoft.com]
Sent: 09 June 2011 18:46
To: Garry Lowther
Subject: Windows Phone Marketplace submission notification

We’re sorry Garry Lowther of TriSys Business Software. We were unable to certify TriSys for WP7, 1.0.0.0.

The certification of application TriSys for WP7 1.0.0.0 completed with errors. You will need to correct these errors before publishing your application to the Windows Phone Marketplace. A detailed report has been prepared and is available from your application listing at http://windowsphone.create.msdn.com/App/List.
You will need your Windows Live ID to access this report. Clicking the link above will redirect you to your Windows Phone dashboard where you can view the status of the application and address the errors.

Following this link to my dashboard, I get absolutely no information from Microsoft of the 'errors' it mentions or indeed what they are and what I can do to rectify this.

Just had 3 more approved and 2 more are being signed in to the App Market (??) Good stuff! Cheers AppMakr!

I uploaded 3 apps after reading the responses in this thread. One of them was approved (the infamous Bruce News Network Reader :-)) and two others were rejected (text not readable when in 'light mode'). So I guess the reliability issues have been resolved, AWESOME.

i'm starting to see more AppMkr based apps in the Marketplace, some have added music, photographs and video. I noticed the 'add photo gallery' option but would love to learn the other tricks. anyone?

@ Mark - I have now had 3 of my apps pass with 3 more still in testing. Looks like it may actually be fixed! Congrats on yours being available and enjoy your celebratory breakfast.

Ive just had 2 apps approved and 2 failed only due to minor problems which were mine. 4.6 & 5.5. Both are easily fixed.

As I was testing on my HTC Win 7 phone I saw the same problem with choosing a feed, go to settings, clear cashed data, return and then close the app and then again press return or back and the app fails to load the data.

God know why anyone would operate a phone like this, but anyway ...

They got passed even with the same fault! Cool! They must have changed their criteria for apps being passed - or they fired the guy who was failing my apps! HA!

Anyway, the Jones household is going to have an English Breakfast to celebrate!

@ Martin - As I stated earlier, I have heard nothing back from them directly at all; however, on a total whim, I rebuilt and re-submitted one of my apps on Sunday (just for kicks) and I received a Windows Phone Marketplace acceptance and publish notification on it last night! Since I was not sure if it was a fluke or not, I rebuilt 5 other apps and re-submitted all of them last night to see if they pass too. Again, since I haven't heard anything from AppMakr directly, I can't confirm they have definitely addressed this (maybe I got lucky on the one app), but I would suggest rebuilding and re-submitting now and see what happens.

I also reported this bug back on the 4th may and I've heard nothing from Appmakr until this morning when I received an email asking:

We'd love to hear what you think of our customer service. Please take a moment to answer one simple question by clicking either link below:

How would you rate the customer service you received?

Good, I'm satisfied

Bad, I'm unsatisfied

and the answer is rubbish obviously!

I'm not having this issue, but I am having other issues with an app that has passed and I've decided to pass on appmakr until they are out of beta.  If you are a developer, there's a nice visual studio template over on codeplex that's a great starting point for these types of apps.  It can be found at socialviewer.codeplex.com.

Oh, and for the record I filed this bug 27 days ago and still no update.  I guess they're working on it but who knows.

I've heard nothing.  It is a beta I guess but you'd think it would at least be functional.

Well, it's now been another 2 weeks (which now makes it over a month since original submission) that have passed and still no resolution to the error listed below, nor has there been any updates or communications on when to expect any resolution.

Comments: The application fails to reactivate after being deactivated. Steps to reproduce:

1. Launch the application.

2. Press "..."

3. Press "settings."

4. Press "clear" to clear the cached data.

5. Press "ok."

6. Press the device's back button.

7. Select any category.

8. Ensure that all content has loaded, then press the device's start button.

10. Press the device's back button immediately or after 10 seconds.

11. Notice that the application terminates unexpectedly and fails to reactivate after it has been deactivated

Anyone heard anything on this or found a way around it? Having 5 apps just sitting and waiting until this gets resolved with no input whatsoever from AppMakr is far beyond frustrating.

@ Jerry Wang - I certainly hope they can help soon. I've had several AppMakr apps that have continued to be rejected by Windows Phone Marketplace for over a month now based on several separate bugs that have been filed. Hoping that one day they can actually pass the certification process instead of weeks upon weeks of bug error rejections.

Hi,

Another similar Error from Windows: Any Ideas? I checked also your "bug fix post" rebuilding the App last Week. No success!

1. Launch the application.

2. Select the ellipses icon located at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.

3. Select the "Settings" option.

4. Select the option to clear the application's cache.

5. Select the OK option.

6. Select the device's back button.

7. Select one of the articles.

8. When the article loads, select the device's Start button.

9. Wait 5-10 seconds and then select the device's back button.

10. Notice the application attempts to launch and then terminates.

This error is reproducible 5 out of 5 times.

I have 6 apps (the iPhone and Android versions are all in the markets) that got stuck with WP7 Marketplace Review process with the reported issue. It appears to be a show-stopping bug for the current AppMakr WP7 app making. Help desk please pay attention and treat this problem with priority.

Until then, you will not find AppMakr apps in the Windows Phone Marketplace.

I have the same problem, 3 apps are pending approval but get shot down each time. I hope it can be fixed, AppMkr rules but this is a showstopper....

I just submitted a bug report...

At this point I am probably just going to move on.  Coding an app my self to do this will take less time and effort to get into the marketplace....

I'm the one who filed this originally last week.  Seems like there are one or two others opened as duplicates somewhere as well.  Based on when I first saw an app rejected I'd say this issue has existed since the beginning of April but I've still never seen any kind of response that would indicate they're working on it.  If I knew of an alternative I'd probably move on at this point but I'm not aware of any other site that offers this kind of functionality.

@ J.C. - I agree. As noted in my reply to Steven, AppMakr Help told me, "If it's a bug that is effecting a large number of people, dev will try and work it into the release schedule." Care to file a bug report on this as well to help get their attention over this really big issue?

You'd think that since this is a show stopper bug that renders the entire app useless they'd work on fixing it ASAP.  As it is, I don't see how anyone anywhere could ever make a WinPhone app using AppMakr until this bug is fixed.  Hard to imagine a bug more critical than that.

@ Steven - I asked AppMakr Help about any update on the bug submitted and their reply was, "If it's a bug that is effecting a large number of people, dev will try and work it into the release schedule." Sounds like we need more people to start adding comments here or bringing this up. Thebug # I submitted is #762924 if you're able to add any comments there as well. Ideally people will add more comments here ad then there as well.

I submitted this as a bug after having the exact same rejection notice on several different apps. I haven't heard a thing back since. I also asked the question in the Windows Phone QA forum and didn't hear any answer there either.
